Track Of The Day :: Family Fiction - Old Money

Words: Linn Branson

Brighton alt-rock-Americana quartet Family Fiction - a new moniker for the former Cessna Deathwish - return with not just a new name, but a rather good new single to boot.

Following February's single 'The Bends' under their previous name, 'Money' (out now via AWAL/Kobalt), is equally affecting.

Tom Langridge's video for the track perfectly captures the song's feel - if you're not too caught up in vocalist George McCanna's lead acting role, that is!

Being raised in a fundamentalist Christian church, McCanna watched firsthand the power a religious figure can have over a group of people. The song explores what makes people succumb to a figure of spiritual authority and the manipulation used on vulnerable people. If you have ever witnessed an American evangelist preacher at work, you'll notice the references here.

"At the heart of the song is the fallout of losing one's faith and the wider questions leaving a mindset of delusion opens up. Ultimately it's about the nature of belief and its pitfalls," say the band.

Family Fiction play the Folklore #43 Xmas Party w/Catgod & Brian M (WSR) on December 19 at The White Rabbit in Brighton.
