Little Indie Roundtable Review - w/e May 5 2017

This week our three guest reviewers take on another five new tracks and give them a spin through the headphones before they then air their opinion on each.

This week's panel: FREAK, aka “one-man Nirvana" Connar Ridd; bassist with Avalanche Party (North Yorks garage punks), Joe Bell; Little Indie contributor Lewis Ridley.

LOVE TALK - HER NAME IS JENNY
Driven by heavy licks and pulsating beats, the new grunge-tinged single from Danish alt-rock four-piece Love Talk is released on May 19 via Tapetown Records. The song was inspired by a girl they met at Roskilde Festival in 2014, and focusses on the blurred lines between obsession and admiration for someone.

Connar Ridd: Really cool track, totally my kinda vibe. I love the lo-fi fuzzy guitar vibes going on! My favourite track out of the five! 4.5/5

Joe Bell:  Cool-paced grungy tune. Like a Dandy Warhol banger. 3.5/5

Lewis Ridley: Nice grunge guitar and drum sound on this one. It has a repeated line which is on the fence between catchy and annoying, but other than that a good tune. 4/5

Total score: 12/15

COLOUR OF SPRING - ECHOES
The Leeds outfit released this Matt Peel-produced single last week, and precedes their self-titled EP which will be released on June 23 through House of Love Records. Dreamy shoegaze with driving percussion set against Shane Hunter's floating vocals and fuzzy guitar riffs.

CR: Whoah - super dreamy. I feel like I wanna fall asleep, but in a good way? Cool production and song. 3/5

JB: - Big ol' anthemic vibes. A nice festival wind down affair. 3/5

LR: Slow burner characterised by bass guitar - sounds almost psychedelic at times. The literal echo on the vocals creates an impressive circular sound. 4/5

Total score: 10/15

CLAY - SAINT
Premiered by Huw Stephens on BBC Radio One, 'Saint' is a bluesy, late night ballad from the Leeds-based band, with a slick of rnb appeal, layered beats and electronic processes - plus the line, "you only call me when it’s half past wine".

CR: Such sick production, catchy melodies, super poppy. Heard of Clay before as well. Cool song! 3.5/5

JB: Smooth listen for them that enjoy those summer night drives. Sounds very different to the first time I heard these. 3/5

LR: Interesting that Huw Stephens goes for this, as my perception of it is that it sounds very much like a typical r'n'b track from 2010. Not quite sure what they're going for. 2/5

Total score: 8.5/15

TANGERINES - 1945
Ahead of debut album ‘Into The Flophouse’ (out May 12 via RIP Records), the South London quartet meld some lo-fi, hazy jangles with reverbed vocals on this newly aired cut from it.

CR: Really cool track, with an interesting old school vibe with a super twangy country feel. Like the vocals as well! 3.5/5

JB: Cool Sixties lo-fi recording. Reminiscent of Miles Kane. 3/5

LR: Feel of celebration as the title might suggest, summer sound and vocals that remind me of Miles Kane's first album. I like it a lot. Beatles song name dropped in there too to fit that 60s sound. 4.5/5

Total score: 11/15

THE PALE WHITE - TURN IT AROUND
Released April 17, the follow-up to debut single ‘Reaction’ sees the Newcastle trio 'turn it around’ with a pulsating blues-rock track that vocalist Adam Hope says is about "the twists and turns in a disastrous relationship that was always destined for a bitter end."

CR: Cool rock track with cool hooks. The riff at 2:38 - 2:44 is really sick too. Beefy! 4/5

JB: A powerhouse Geordie stomper. Can imagine it reverberating around them arenas soon. Big sound those lads have. 4/5

LR: Full of energy with loads going on, and guitar riffs that strike similarities with The Black Keys. Can imagine this sounding emphatic live; instant explosive impact. 5/5

Total score: 13/15
