** PREMIERE ** Pip Hall - James

Words: Linn Branson

There's no denying that things have moved pretty quickly for young Preston songstress Pip Hall since Little Indie introduced her here last summer.

So far, she has released one EP and two singles - debut ‘Devil You Don’t’ followed by the slow-burning 'Turn Over' after signing a record deal; fĂȘted by Radio 1's Huw Stephens and included in the ‘Best of BBC Introducing’ playlist, and been written glowingly about by music scribes - and all before she has still yet to turn 17.

Now about to unveil her second EP 'James' this Friday (March 10), Pip shares the last of its tracks before release, and this title track, given its debut airplay by John Kennedy on Radio X, Little Indie is pleased to now premiere here.

Named after her late father who Pip lost as a young child, 'James' is naturally a song that holds deep meaning and is a nostalgic homage to the man she knew. As you’d expect for such a difficult subject it took a considerable time for the teenage songwriter to compose 'James' as she wanted to take everything into consideration and didn’t want it to be something artificial.

“I'd often come up with scenarios in my head that involved him being in hiding or playing a joke on us and that it was all just a really elaborate plan to test me,” says Pip, remembering growing up without her father and the way she’d reason the loss.

Attempting to detail her struggle to deal with this growing up, the four-minute 'James' is delicately built around beds of dreamy synths, over Pip’s soulful vocals send out gut-wrenchingly honest and open lyrics that are sure to strike a chord with many listeners. And wait for when the sample cuts in just before the three-minute mark...

‘James’ is out on March 10 via My Little Empire Records. Pre-order here.
