Introducing :: The Brocklebank

Words: Linn Branson

Released on the last day of February, 'Criminals' is the lead single from emerging Welsh teens, The Brocklebank. The four youngsters (all aged 18, with bassist Cameron Inkpen just 17) may not long be out of school, but are already forging out their own distinct sound blending modern indie influences with 80s pop.

After finding label support from Smart Indie Records via Twitter, along with receiving support and advice from Roy Stride of Scouting For Girls, The Brocklebank release their debut EP ‘Criminals’ on May 5.

"We’re essentially kids, but we don't just do this for fun," say the young indie pop band from Beddau, South Wales who formed a year ago after meeting at school. "It transcends that. This is our life. We’re not in a band for any reason other than we all value music so completely that we can’t not make music. It's a time in our lives where we don't have anything else. We’re 18-year-olds departing school and that’s always going to be full of turmoil, so we document that and give it life in our songs."

Listening to 'Criminals' the immediate standout are 18-year-old frontman and guitarist Curtis Hicks' vocals. Not so much for their dreamy delivery, but for the somewhat different inflection on the words; with the languorous guitar stroll and steady drum support behind, ''Criminals' makes for an interesting first outing.
