Hot Top Ten - August 26 2016

TRACK OF THE WEEK
REBEL WESTERNS - ATOMIC BLONDE
New single - out September 9 via Depot Records - from Scottish alt-pop quartet from Edinburgh, who describe it as "an exploration of love -wanting what you can’t have and our in-built desire for self-destruction. An intense, autobiographical affair wrapped up in a three-minute pop song." It's also a very very good one. Opening on snappy drum beats and popping bass lines, and fuelled by the soaring, melodic vocals of Dominic Thomson. Catch it performed live at La Belle Angele in Edinburgh at a free entry show on September 23.

RAINBOW RESERVOIR - COCO SLEEPS AROUND
Oxford power-pop outfit's title track from upcoming EP. Filled with scuzzy guitars and catchy uptempo melodies, it’s pop-punk blaster - or as vocalist Amelia Space says: "it's punk in spirit and upbeat, has lots of rhythm, and can be romantic but with a dark side." Released on Odd Box Records on September 10.

ORCHIN - ONE
LA-based noise pop project of Jeremy McLennan (with
guitarist Daniel Lavezzo and drummer Griffin Kisner), follow 'Dark/Wasting Time' with this new single out this week as a double A-side (w/'If I Ever'). Hazy fuzziness that melds keys and drums around a hypnotic melody.

FOND OF RUDY - THE LINE
We featured the Brighton calypso-pop quartet back in January with 'Are You Ready?' Now back with latest single of summery jangly pop, catchy beats and lustrous guitar sounds.

EASTERN BARBERS - GET LOOSE
Like a good book, a decent song needs an intro, a middle and a compelling end to hold interest. Fortunately, this loose and moody South London outfit (here with guest rapper Paper Plates) lather up in solid style and fulfill all three components admirably.

LUSTER - GOOD DREAMER
This is the debut track from a new Danish band unveiled this week. The Copenhagen quartet are fronted by (the American sounding, but apparently a Dane) 'Jason Prince Jr.' (and his hair). However, we feel he may well be Jacob Haubjerg who materialised earlier this year with another new band, Masasolo. Both display Tame Impala-esque dreampop vibes anyway.

EMPATHY TEST - DEMONS
Released last week, double A-side single (w/'Seeing Stars'), both from the darkly atmospheric London electronic duo - Isaac Howlett and Adam Relf - we have been following since 2014. Coming from their forthcoming debut album, Howlett's absorbing vocals and synths play around a robotic beat. Catch on September 9 for a release show at Cafe 1001, London.

CHASMS - BLACK ICE
San Francisco-based project of Jess Labrador and Shannon Madden, this new single is filled with glacial guitars and bewitching dark vocals. From the band's forthcoming, debut album, 'On The Legs Of Love Purified', out on October 14 via felte.

INDIAN WELLS - RACQUETS
If we said this track was a load of balls, we'd actually be right. Italian EDM and tennis nut Pietro Iannuzzi samples racquet sounds against hypnotic bass, droning synths and ambient electronics. Match point comes almost six minutes later. Released today via Bad Panda Records.

GEORGE COSBY - JULIET
You don't hear many voices this stirring new offering from the London-based singer we profiled here last year. Cosby dives down into his vocal boots for this emotionally fraught track from his upcoming EP, 'A Savage Kiss', which is out on October 14. Before that you can catch him live at London's Moth Club on September 27.
