10 acts not to miss at Y Not - and why you should not

Words: Kenny Davies

Y Not Festival, the annual summer music shindig held in Pikehall, Derbyshire, is once again imminently upon us. With a whole bucket-load of acts lined up across the three days, July 29 - 31.

If you still haven't got around to working out just who to see, we suggest making for some of the up-and-coming bands lower down in the pecking order, but likely to be headlining themselves before long. Who needs Noel Gallagher anyway...

In no particular order, here are 10 acts I'll be in the front row for this weekend. How about you?

1. BABY STRANGE
This Glasgow three-piece are fast, frenetic and dark, and will rip you up, spit you out - and leave you wanting more. Their new single ‘Friend’ is taken from their debut album ‘Want It Need It’, both out on September 2.

2. CABBAGE
Full on musical assault from the Manchester five-piece about the twisted everyday events of life. Think Fat White Family but with more to say. Not to be missed live.

3. KASSASSIN STREET
Big psychedelic groves are the order of the day with this Portsmouth outfit. Get your dancing shoes on and go catch them early and let them melt your mind.

4. APRIL
Harking back to the days of a well loved Manchester sound, these five fellas from Nuneaton have added their own twist to it. Huge heavy beats slide along weaving melodies will see jumping and moshing go to a new level.

5. THE SHERLOCKS
Big anthems in waiting from this band of two sets of brothers from Sheffield. The new Courteeners, or the new Arctic Monkeys? You decide. Either way their songs will have you singing along all night in the campsite.

6. PRETTY VICIOUS
Young Welsh lads who perform loud, powerfully and look to blow you away with their take on rock 'n' roll. Big sounds for the next jilted generation.

7. BLOSSOMS
Summer kissed indie tunes from the Stockport five-piece who are fast becoming one of the bands of 2016. Catch them now before they go massive and take over the world.

8. THE VRYLL SOCIETY
Early Verve-inspired groove laden tunes that will resonate in your brain and take you away into outer space and back. Feed your soul and mind with their kaleidoscopic sound waves. They will thank you later.

9. SHAME
South London's no-holds-barred gang are here to blow any festival cobwebs away with a bit of post-punk, sprinkled with dirty bass lines, razor sharp guitars and a live show not to be missed.

10. ASYLUMS
Southend's DIY punks with catchy riffs, boundless energy and plenty of character are served up here from a band fast-gaining support. With their debut album out Friday, expect plenty of plugs. Catch their invigorating tales of everyday life through dark glasses - and be prepared for a wild ride.
