Bushstock 2016 :: Ten Acts You Must See This Year - Part 1

Words: Louisa Wood

Bushstock 2016: A one day event that's a dream to those people who can't get away with not washing their hair for four days at weekend festivals. The luxury of enjoying a day's music and then not having to slump into a two-man tent with three other people, drunk, sweaty and falling asleep to the sweet melody of 1000 strangers snoring -  if that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea either then Bushstock could be for you.

In its sixth year, the multi-venue event taking place on June 18 in Shepherd's Bush, has an extensive line-up showcasing the up-and-coming talent soon to break onto the commercial scene, and with past line-ups featuring the likes of Bastille, The Staves and Michael Kiwanuka you know that you’re in for something special.

Hosted by Communion (the record label founded by producer Ian Grimble, Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons and Kev Jones of Bear’s Den), Bushstock has become an unmissable event each summer, growing in popularity every year.

So, with the event just six weeks away, here are just a handful of the ones we think you shouldn't miss…

Seramic
Shrouded in mystery a simple Google search won’t find you much on this up and coming artist, but his tracks alone speak volumes. 'People Say' has become one of those tracks that I play over and over again; electronic and soulful elements mixed with some gospel backing generates a really modern and exciting first release.

Seramic recently released his second track 'Waiting' that has been met by general praise and Bushstock is one of several festivals on the cards. I, for one, am more than ready for the UK festival scene to have an injection of synth soul.

Syd Arthur
Three albums released, tours with the likes of Paul Weller and Vampire Weekend, dabbling in huge festivals like SXSW and Coachella in the USA, I think it's clear to see that these boys are onto a winner. Formed in 2003 in Canterbury, Kent the four-piece made up of brothers Liam and Joel Magill, Fred Rother and Raven Bush have generated a beautiful catalogue of psychedelic tracks, with soothing, melodic vocals and a touch of jazz and soul.

Vant

Now this show is going to be exciting. Guaranteed to be energetic, loud and sweaty the London-born group Vant has had a huge 2016 already, from supporting Royal Blood, a slot at BBC Radio 1’s Future Festival and becoming a common feature for Annie Mac’s “Hottest Record in the World”, singer-songwriter Mattie Vant seems to know what he’s doing!

Formed in 2014, Vant has created a band that fills me with excitement; their scuzz-rock onslaughts generate catchy tracks mixed with powerful, political lyrics - a mix that’s really working.

Tibet
You’d all be lying if you said that you didn’t enjoy a good indie rock and roll melody, some foot-stomping, finger-clicking goodness that’s met with harmonies tuned to perfection and a 90s Britpop feel. Tibet, the four-piece from Cardiff, have generated just that. Releasing their new EP through Alcopop! Records later this month, their new single 'I’ll Put You In My Pocket' showcases their fun, catchy style, and with a huge number of festivals lined up for this summer, the boys' popularity is sure to grow.

Sara Hartman
Following the release of her debut EP 'Satellite' in April, Sara Hartman’s Spotify plays have exploded. The folk-pop singer from New York packed her bags and moved to Berlin with the aim of a career in music and with such powerful, fresh and moving vocals and lyrics, she was quickly dubbed for success.

If you enjoy acoustic folk music with a splash of pop and electronic elements, make sure that you don’t miss Sara live. She generates the kind of tracks that you could listen to for days non-stop with ease.
