February 5 2016 - Hot Top Ten

EAGULLS - LEMONTREES
First single from the Leeds crew's projected second album, it may not be pop but it has enough of a jangly shimmer melodic to its gaze-esque veneer that is built around George Mitchell’s vocal howl to mark a noticeable change to the band's previous output.

IRONWOODS - TIDES
Hawaii-based four-piece with a shiny, upbeat track from their self-titled debut album - one of the first songs they wrote, inspired by the nature of the ocean - with guitarist/ singer Brad Stanfill leading with some suitably surfy sound waves.

MOTHXR - SHE CAN'T TELL
Ahead of the release of their debut album ‘Centerfold’ - out February 26 via Sony Red/ Kitsuné Records, this latest track - produced by the band's bassist  Jimmy Giannopoulos - from the Brooklyn four-piece sees them deliver their dark, R&B sound, with Penn Badgley’s vocals dominating over choppy beats.

GUNNS - SHE'S A RAINBOW
Self-styled "beachgaze" title track from the Perth, Australia outfit's debut EP 'She's A Rainbow', out February 12. Four minutes of reverbed psych-gaze, warped vocal, silky harmonies, and big guitar solo.

SPOOKYLAND - GOD'S EYES
The first single from the Sydney quartet’s debut album 'Beauty Already Beautiful', out May 6 via Play It Again Sam. No ignoring Marcus Gordon's distinctive vocals over an impressive three-guitar attack and pounding drums, with a catchy foot-tapping beat, building to a climactic end.

CROWS - WHISPER

James Cox once again leads the gritty London rock quartet into the realms of dark, menacing hardcore. Taken from their long-awaited debut EP 'Unwelcome Light', out via Telharmonium on March 25. Catch them live at Camden's Black Heart, London on March 10.

TOM LOW - PHONE
Off kilter indie pop debut single (released last week) from the 22-year-old Liverpool singer-songwriter, arriving ahead of the release of his first EP 'Phone' out February 26 via Deltasonic. Heavy influenced 60s sound. Supporting C Duncan on UK tour February/ March.

TANGERINES - YOU LOOK LIKE SOMETHING I KILLED
The south-London four-piece follow last year's 'Skin Dives' with this new single recorded in RIP Studios by Syd Kemp, mixed by MJ of Hookworms, and digitally released on March 18 via RIP Records. Three minutes of chugging Americana-like guitar lines with a seasoning of rock 'n' psych and Gareth Hoskins’ drawled vocal over catchy melodies. Catch them live at London's Servant Jazz Quarters on March 17.

PORCHES - CAR
Aaron Maine - aka Porches -shares this homage to the four-wheeled vehicle, taken from his track from his full-length 'Pool', out today (February 5) via Domino Records. Dreamy instrumentation over metronomic drums, as Maine takes us on a spin: "I pull up the car and I let it run/It takes us away from where we are/ Oh, what a machine/ Oh, what a machine."

CULLEN OMORI - SOUR SILK
The ex-Smith Westerns' vocalist's latest track from his upcoming debut solo album 'New Misery', out on March 18 via Sub Pop, is a woozy psych-pop blend with eerie harmonies and Omori lending a subtle presence out front.
