London-based newcomers, Wovoka Gentle have given us a very nice little track in 'Seventh Day', taken from their self-titled debut EP 'Wovoka Gentle [Yellow]', which is released on July 13 via Yucatan Records. [Subsequent EPs will also be self-titled, but feature different colours - we're not sure why, but what the hell!]
The experimental folk three-piece, comprised of William Stokes and twins Imogen and Ellie Mason, may have their roots in folk and Americana, but they also draw upon the psych soundscapes of the late 60s, as well as jazz and collage music; combining an array of classic instrumentation with electronic sampling and sound manipulation.
‘Seventh Day’ is something pretty special, both beautiful and bewitching; harnessing sparkling synths and vocal harmonies against a more traditional folk soundscape.
From what they say (in a recent interview with Consequence of Sound), a key element of their sound comes via, "trying to play our instruments in relatively unconventional ways. For example, hitting guitars with drum sticks, using noisy synth modulation or heavily affecting acoustic instrument sounds until they’re pretty unrecognizable."
It may be unusual, but it sounds like Wovoka Gentle may have hit on a winning formula here.
